What’s worse than getting arrested for stealing a vehicle? Doing so while you left your 1 and 2 year old at home alone. That’s the story of Ashley N. May, who decided helping her friend Robert steal a Jeep was more important than looking after her own children.
A woman who reportedly left her two children at home Wednesday while she helped a man steal a Jeep was charged with two counts of attempted child neglect, among other charges, Johnson City police said.
According to a release from the police department, Jeffery Dingus heard his vehicle, a Jeep Cherokee, start up in the parking lot of his apartment complex at 3711 N. Roan St., and saw it being driven away.
Dingus told police that he and his brother, Tyson Dingus, chased the stolen Jeep to Walmart, 3111 Browns Mill Road, where they saw a man and woman get out of the Jeep and run into the store.
Once inside the store, Tyson tackled the man, Robert Cody Haney, 24, 305 Orleans St., and a short fight occurred.
Police said they saw Haney remove latex gloves from his hands and saw two screw drivers in his right front left pocket.
The woman was identified as Ashley N. May, 21, 103 Sequoyah Road, and a search revealed she had a small, clear baggie with a green leafy substance and a glass pipe with residue in the front left pocket of her pants.
Haney, who was charged with auto theft, was taken to Johnson City Medical Center for treatment of injuries suffered during the brief fight with Tyson.
May was charged with auto theft, simple possession/casual exchange and unlawful drug paraphernalia. She was also charged with two counts of attempted child neglect after officers discovered she had left her two children, ages 1 and 2, home alone while she allegedly committed this crime.
May’s children were taken into custody by Child Protective Services, police said.
Both Haney and May were taken to the Washington County Detention Center. May was being held on $20,000 bond and Haney was being held on $10,000 bond.
Both are scheduled to appear in Sessions Court today at 9 a.m.
