An update almost more suited for our sister site WTFTattoos.com, we’d like to introduce you to Patty Jo Marsh and Jacob Edwards Bartels, the Georgia couple that thought it was perfectly fine to tattoo 6 of their 7 children. That’s right, these two idiots put together a make shift tattoo gun using guitar strings as needles and tattooed all but one of their children. Continue reading for the full news article and for photos of their jerry-rigged tattoo gun as well as the sick ink they tattooed on their children..

SUMMERVILLE, Ga. (CBS/AP) Tattooing six of their underage children with a jerry-rigged machine, using a guitar string as the needle, sounded like a good idea to Patty Jo Marsh and her husband Jacob Edwards Bartels at the time.

But the Georgia pair failed to recognize the consequences of their ink-fest, and they were arrested late last year after the biological mother of two of the children complained the tats wouldn’t wash off.
Go figure.
Turns out Georgia state law prohibits both tattoos on children and those created by unlicensed artist.

Marsh and Bartels were arrested December 28, and are charged with three counts each of illegal tattooing, second degree child cruelty and reckless conduct.
Both bonded out of jail Friday evening on $10,000 property bonds each.
Police say the “parents of the year” used a plastic pen body with a needle made from a guitar string connected to an electric motor to tattoo six children and themselves.
Five children, ages 10 to 17, got a cross-like tattoo on their hands and a sixth had “mom and dad” inked on his arm — in honor of you know who..
Only the youngest child was ink-free.
The Georgia Department of Family and Children’s Services was called. All the children were placed with other family members upon the couple’s arrest.
Marsh says she gave the children tattoos because “they asked us to.”
“It’s unusual,” said Chattooga County Sheriff John Everett, to the city’s local paper. “I’ve never seen parents tattooing their kids like that.”
“I’m their mother. Shouldn’t I be able to decide if they get one?,” Marsh said, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, after being released from jail on bail.
“They weren’t hurt by them,” Marsh said to the paper.
“We would never do anything to hurt them….I don’t understand why this is getting ‘blowed up’ so big.”

‘Blowed up’ so big indeed.
Speechless.
And the comment where she says “blowed up” explains it all. Poor little kids. What a couple of douche-bags.
Come one now..is that not what every 10 year old want for Christmas? Jailhouse tats and infection?
Okay, kinda bad. There are cultures out there where tattoos are considered sacred. Being a parent myself if I could lo-jack my 8 year old I would
In article it states that the biological mother complained .Yet the brainless female says that she is their mother ?
Anne,
I would assume that their are at least 2 different mothers.
it says
“They weren’t hurt by them,” Marsh said to the paper.
“We would never do anything to hurt them….I don’t understand why this is getting ‘blowed up’ so big.”
I have a few tattoos and they hurt. I could never put my kids thru that. I don’t care if they asked for it or not. Isn’t it the parent job to say no.
In Maryland it is illegal for anyone under 18 to get a tattoo. I don’t know about the DYI business, but anyone of legal age who is dumb enough to allow an amateur to put ink under their skin jolly well deserves the consequences.
really now, at age how many boys didn’t think tatoos were cool at ten? heck at seventeen I knew three kid who themsevles, one who built a gun to do it. they never mention the sex of the other five kids, if they’re all boys then yeah of course the little brothers would want inked after the seventeen year old got a tat.
stuipd parent? yes. where redneck steriotypes come from? yes. the most evil thing a stupid red neck ever did to their kid’s? not by a really long shot.
keep it in perspective.
I need some closure on the biological mother statement.
Ten to one they are are welfare. Mom and dad should be “fixed” so they won’t breed any longer.
Common sense is a wonderful thing stupid stupid people. If they are doing that what else are they doing and it not being reported. Omg if my ex even had a thought of tating my kids with the new whatever I would be in jail for murder. Come on now
I highly doubt pain was much of a factor involved in these tattoos. They are so small they look like quick little cuts and if you think that hurts you got a whole world of reality to face. The family should get some counselling for show and let to move on. People have done worse things and suffered less.
I have “friends” that have had ink done 2 their two girls. Both girls ages 13 and 15 sport at least 8 tats each along with nose rings and toung rings. WTF are parents thinkin?
Hmmm…Georgia. I thought I heard banjos.
A kid of 16 or 17 wanting a tattoo – I get that. Here (Alberta) kids 16 to 18 can get a professional tattoo done in a shop with written consent from a parent. Being a step-parent myself, my kids have asked me permission for things like that. The first discussion always involved both biological parents. It’s a communal effort to raise kids, and that especially includes life-long ink! But 10 years old? That child is not mature enough to understand.
Besides – the cross on the hand symbolizes having done hard time. Just what every 17 year old needs on his hand going into the working world.
Piercings can be taken out. hair color and cut can be changed. Ink? Lazer removal is expensive and painful.

I have six tattoos of my own, and they certainly didn’t tickle getting them, but to me the pain is one of the lesser things. The children will have to deal with having those images on their skin for a good portion of their lives (some ‘homemade’ tattoos fade quicker than professionally done ones but it still takes several years) I remember wanting tattoos when I was young, about 11 was the first time I wanted one enough to ask for it, but wanting one then and getting them when you are that young is two different things.
My parents made me wait and I am glad they did I was able to plan and design my tattoos for far longer than I would have when I was young and impulsive. I love the ones I have now, had I gotten the original ones I wanted I would not be pleased with them now. There are rules against underage and DIY tattoos for a reason, and I can’t believe any parent would do that to a child that is too young to understand what it means to have a picture on your skin that will never come off.
The kids now have a permanent, built-in ad for child welfare advocacy. While getting rid of it’s definitely the right thing, I hope that at least one decides to hold onto it and passes the story along. The more outrage about this kind of thing, the better, IMHO.
2 of the children aren’t even hers. I would be livid if someone did that to my child, no more visitation!
May I just say my 4-yr-old has been asking for a “shot tattoo” for months now! I keep telling her no, that it will hurt, and that kids her age aren’t allowed. I had no idea I could make a tattoo gun myself! Cool! (just kidding, just kidding!) Seriously though, I’m not sure where she got the idea…
Both of them need “Dumb-Ass” tattooed on their foreheads right after their sterilization.
At first I thought “Oh, 17? that’s not that bad” but then I read 10 and thought “Hey stupid, ……..quit it”
Now.. EVERY PARENT should tattoo their own SS# on their children. That way when SS takes their children and places them up for Adoption on lies and false documents, at least the child can find their parents. (I’D BET that most of these parents are either Foster Parents or Adopted parents!.. though don’t get me wrong there are some idiot bio’s out there)

Didn’t someone else do the numbered tattoo thing?
Yes, numbers were used on prisoners during the holocaust. Ironically put there by the SS so one could refer to them as SS-numbers also…..
When I was 10 I was going to be a rock star and marry Zartan from GI JOE. Guess what? I grew up and changed my mind. What a shame that these poor kids are most likely stuck with these tats forever, even after they grow up and change their minds (although I highly doubt these kids eagerly chose this ink in the first place no matter what their “mother” said). I have tats. I like tats and will probably get more. This is my choice as an ADULT! My daughter will also have that choice, when she is an ADULT.
Georgia, Georgia, an old sweet song I sing, just an old sweet song and tattooing you kids, keeps Georgia on my mind.
wow religiousness nuts like hidan
I have more than a couple tats and my daughter is big into “when I grow up I’m gonna get” (she is 11) to keep her from doing any stupid home tats I have promised her that on her 18th bday I will take her to get a tattoo IF she keeps her skin clear from stupid home tats. I also have a fugly tat on my tummy that I use as a lesson to keep all tats done professionally. I try to express to my daughter that its forever and that what she likes now, she may not be so keen on when she is 80.
I hate to admit this because I left the south and educated myself to get away from stuff like this, but unfortunately this waste of space Patty is my first cousin. Her dad is my dad’s twin. And our dad’s are an exen bigger waste of space then her. We were raised Independent Southern Baptists and were actually “encouraged” by East Ridge, TN church to “mark our children so the devil can’t claim them”. I think my cousin took it seriously. Hence the reason why I have an accomplished science based career and she works in fast food. I left and escaped, she stayed and believes… Another reason I don’t speak with my family. 15 years now and after finding out about this, I’m proud of myself for disowning them… her last name used to be Arney (Family Name)
